Resort Information
The Birches Resort was built in the 1930′s as a hunting and fishing lodge. We’re located on Moosehead Lake in Rockwood, Maine, on a privately owned, 11,000 acre nature preserve. We’re in the heart of Maine’s Great North Woods, the last remaining wilderness in New England. My family has owned and operated The Birches Resort for over 40 years. In the summer try canoeing, kayaking, hiking and mountain biking. In the winter take to the trails on cross country skis or snow shoes or explore the area by snowmobile. Search for wildlife on a moose cruise or wilderness safari. Like to fish? Fly fishing and ice fishing are our specialty. Take a dip in the lake, work out in our new fitness center or just kick back and gaze at the beautiful scenery. All activities originate from the resort; once here, you won’t need your car. Accommodations vary from cabins on the lake. lodge rooms to large rental homes. Try us for breakfast, lunch or dinner in our dining room overlooking the lake. From Boston, MA & Points South and West:
I-95 North to Newport, ME exit 157.Turn left at the end of the exit ramp and take Route 7 north from Newport to Dexter (14 miles). Take Route 23 north & west from Dexter to Guilford (11 miles). Look for signs to the Moosehead Lake Region. At the “5 Corners” in Guilford, take a hard right. Take Route 6/15 from Guilford to Greenville (26 miles). Make a left at the flashing light in Greenville and continue on Rte. 6/15 to Rockwood (22 miles). Follow directions from Rockwood to The Birches Resort.
From Houlton, ME & Points North and East:
Take I-95 South to Howland, exit 217. Take Route 6/155 from Howland to LaGrange (12 miles). Take Route 6/16 from LaGrange to Dover-Foxcroft (20 miles). Take Route 6/15 from Dover-Foxcroft to Rockwood (58 miles). Follow directions from Rockwood to The Birches Resort.
From Calais & Bangor, ME & Points East: Take Route 9 West from Calais to Bangor (90 miles). Follow Route 15 from Bangor to Rockwood (90 miles). Route 15 becomes Route 6/15 in Dover-Foxcroft). Follow directions from Rockwood to The Birches Resort.
From Rockwood to The Birches Resort Do not go into Rockwood Village. Continue on Rte. 6/15 to a two-lane bridge. (You will pass The Moose River and a general store on the right.) Cross the bridge and take a right at the T intersection. Take the paved road (3/4 miles) which turns to dirt (1 mile) and follow signs to The Birches Resort. It’s about a five minute drive from the bridge to the resort.If you arrive late, we will leave instructions for you at the desk or tacked to the front door.
